(Updated 10/21/12) When parents go to New York City with kids they might be worried about how to keep the children busy and entertained. The good news is NYC may be the financial capital of the world but it’s also an interesting, diverse and fun place to visit with children. It has an unbelievable number of kid-friendly museums that provide exciting and enriching experiences for all ages.
After doing some searches I came up with the top ten list below. Have fun spending time in NYC with the family!
Ten Cool Things in NYC for Kids
1. American Museum of Natural History
This is one of the city’s “don’t-miss” with kids. The excitement begins even in the subway station, where the walls feature wonderful ceramic decorations of dinosaurs, insects, birds and mammals.
2. Statue of Liberty
The symbol of New York is impressive enough from across the harbor, but loads of fun to visit with kids. They’ll enjoy the ferry ride to the island and the free guided tour.
3. Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum
When was the last time you boarded a real aircraft carrier? This is simply one of the city’s top attractions for kids. In 1982 it opened as a sea, air and space museum on the New York waterfront.
4. Broadway Musical, The Lion King
Still a hot ticket, this adaptation of a Disney animated movie is worth planning the family trip around.
5. Central Park Zoo and Tisch Children’s Zoo
Beautifully organized, this pair of tiny zoos is perfect for young animal lovers. Kids can get pretty close to every species on display and they do not have to walk very far to see everything.
6. Ellis Island Immigration Museum
Free ranger-guided tours are held on a regular basis and kids can easily spend 2 hours having fun while they learn history.
7. The High Line
The High Line has become one of the city’s top attractions for both locals and visitors. Each turn in the track brings another delightful outdoor habitat. The High Line is certainly a meditative place as well.
8. Metropolitan Museum of Art
Parents can have a great time at the Metropolitan Museum even with toddlers, as long as they remember two rules: Go at kids’ pace, and don’t let the museum guards intimidate you.
9. Museum of Modern Art
For young kids, what’s not to like? This is a visceral banquet of colors, shapes and textures that provide instant gratification around every corner. Also, kids will get a wonderful lesson on the infinite possibilities of creative expression.
10. South Street Seaport and the Seaport Museum
At the South Street Seaport, a charming jumble of restored warehouses and maritime shops on the cobblestone East River waterfront, kids will time travel back to New York Harbor’s clipper-ship heyday.
